Car Seat Safety Program
The Family Resource Center offers support to families in the community with the goal of keeping children safe in vehicles through proper car seat selection, installation, and use.
Two of our Parent Educators are trained as Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPSTs). As CPSTS, they have completed specialized training and are certified through the Safe Kids Worldwide certification program, which is administered in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
As CPSTs, our team is trained to help with things like:
- Correct car seat installation
- Making sure harnesses fit properly
- Choosing the right seat based on a child’s:
- age
- height
- weight
- developmental needs
- Transitioning safely between:
- rear-facing seats
- forward-facing seats
- booster seats
- seat belts
- Vehicle-specific installation questions
- Teaching caregivers how to install and use seats independently
- Identifying recalls, expired seats, or unsafe products
- Educating families on best-practice recommendations and WI state laws
A CPST does not just “install car seats.” The role is about education and empowering caregivers to use restraints correctly every ride.
Our Program Offers:
- Car seat check appointments for families
- Car seat checks at community events
- Community presentations
To schedule an appointment with one of our CPSTs or inquire about other car seat safety related partnerships, please email carseatsafety@frc-sc.org.
