Volunteer Tutor Training
The Literacy Council of Sheboygan County offers free training for our prospective tutors so that anyone with a high school degree, patience, and a desire to help another adult succeed is able to be a part of our program. We couldn’t do what we do without all of our passionate tutors—thank you for your interest!
By attending the tutor training, prospective tutors receive a resource binder. In this binder, you’ll find a wide variety of literacy topics: grammar, phonics, speaking, writing, pronunciation, and much more. This binder also contains a copy of the training presentation for tutors to refer back to and community resources that you’re able to take advantage of. The training takes place over three sessions.
Session 1: Who are we and who are our students?
Learn about literacy statistics, why the Literacy Council is so important in our community, who our students are and how the Literacy Council supports them. You’ll also learn about adult learners and different ways you can structure your lessons to serve them best. We’ll also introduce some teaching strategies and ideas about tutoring that you can use.
Session 2: Ways to teach and what to teach
In session 2, tutors-in-training will learn about curriculum, learn about the resources that are provided by the literacy council, and resources that you already have! We’ll discuss some different parts of speech and some techniques for teaching grammar and pronunciation. Then, we’ll watch some videos of tutors in action. We’ll also share some basics on remote tutoring using zoom or smart phones.
Session 3: The Literacy Council Community
We’ll continue our discussion on the different parts of speech and expand to talk about reading, spelling, and writing. We’ll share a sample lesson framework and talk about lesson planning. Then, we’ll share the process of how students and tutors are paired by the Literacy Council and how to check in with the Literacy Council. After that, you’ll learn about how to deal with some of the obstacles you might face, and community resources that are available.
