The Literacy Council has been helping local adults since 1987. The Literacy Council strengthens our community by providing English language and/or reading tutoring to Sheboygan County area adults at no charge. Today, the Literacy Council is needed more than ever! Approximately 8% of Sheboygan County adults are considered low-literate and cannot read or do basic math above a 3rd grade level. Poor literacy affects us all. It is linked to lowered workplace productivity and accidents, crime, health care costs, and problems in school for the next generation. Our tax dollars are used to address these problems.
Adult literacy can change everything. When individuals learn how to read, write, do basic math, and speak English, they have the power to find sustainable employment, make better health care choices, help their children succeed in school, and more!
Caring community members are given training and support to become volunteer tutors and are asked for a minimum time commitment of 6 months. Adult students (who mostly come to us via word of mouth) can apply for tutoring services on our website. The Literacy Council carefully matches compatible tutors and students to form learning pairs. These learning pairs meet in person (following safe social distancing rules) or online via social platforms such as Zoom for a couple hours each week.
